SUMMARY:Collection Bites talk (Manchester)
DESCRIPTION:Join our series of guest speakers for lunchtime conversations discussing key objects from the collection. This month’s conversation will be: The kneeling statue of the Admiral Hor: Ships and sculpture in Sixth Century BC Egypt. Often overlooked because of its damaged state\, the kneeling statue of Hor represents an important military man of the Egyptian Twenty-Sixth Dynasty (c. 595-589 BC). Hor was Admiral of Egypt’s royal Mediterranean fleet at a time of increasingly strained international relations. Campbell Price\, Curator of Egypt and the Sudan at the Museum\, will discuss Hor’s role and the meanings of his temple statue.

SUMMARY:'Pharaoh – King Of Egypt' exhibition opens (Glasgow)
DESCRIPTION:Kelvingrove will soon be welcoming a fascinating British Museum touring show\,Pharaoh–King of Egypt\, as the next temporary exhibition. Opening on 3 November\, the exhibition will showcase 130 objects from the British Museum’s outstanding collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts\, which is the largest of its kind outside of Egypt. The exhibition explores the three main roles of the pharaoh in ancient Egypt – as head of state\, chief priest and commander of the army. The exhibition will also look into the semi-divine status of pharaohs\, which placed them as the intermediary between the world of men and that of the gods. The manner of representing the pharaoh through costume\, crowns and regalia will also be investigated. You will be able to see some fantastic treasures of ancient Egypt\, including sculpture\, bronze figures\, written works on papyrus\, jewellery and weapons. An interesting and exciting programme of events and activities will accompany the exhibition – more details will be available on this website soon and in our October-December issue of What’s On in Glasgow Museums\, copies of which will be available in all our museums and at venues across the city from late September.

SUMMARY:Margaret Maitland, 'Hieroglyphs from the North: Newcastle’s correspondence with the decipherer of the Rosetta Stone' (Newcastle)
DESCRIPTION:Talk starts at 6pm. Free entry but booking essential: please call (0191) 222 6765. To mark the 190th anniversary this September of the first decipherment of hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion\, the Great North Museum: Hancock will reveal its latest research of correspondence from Champollion in its collection at this free lecture. Champollion first announced his breakthrough with the Rosetta Stone\, the trilingual Egyptian inscription now held in the British Museum\, in a lecture in Paris on 27 September 1822; a landmark achievement that is still celebrated internationally today. At the time\, the authenticity of Champollion’s achievement was still being questioned\, but the forward-thinking scholars of Newcastle embraced his breakthrough. The letters in our collection demonstrate that the inscription on our mummy\, Bakt-en-Hor\, was amongst the earliest hieroglyphic texts read by Champollion. Hear from Egyptologist Margaret Maitland as she talks about Champollion’s groundbreaking achievement and her exciting research on the Champollion letters.

SUMMARY:Dr Toby Wilkinson, Bob Partridge Egyptology Lecture, 'The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt' (Manchester)
DESCRIPTION:Ancient Egypt has all the ingredients of an epic novel - glittering courts\, dynastic intrigues\, murky assassinations and epic battles; individual stories of heroism and skulduggery\, of triumph and tragedy; powerful women and tyrannical kings – but the real history is even more surprising. The Ancient Egyptians were the first group of people to share a common culture\, outlook and identity within a defined geographical territory governed by a single political authority - concepts of nationhood that continue to dominate the planet. As the world's first nation-state\, the history of Ancient Egypt is above all the story of the attempt to unite a disparate realm and defend it against hostile forces from within and without. In this lecture\, Toby Wilkinson sets out to reveal Ancient Egypt in all its complexity\, including the relentless propaganda\, the cut-throat politics\, the brutality and repression that lay behind the appearance of unchanging monarchy\, as well as the extraordinary architectural and cultural achievements for which the pharaohs are justly famous. Dr Toby Wilkinson read Egyptology at Downing College\, Cambridge\, graduating with First Class Honours and winning the University’s Thomas Mulvey Prize. Toby studied for his PhD at Christ’s College\, Cambridge\, where he subsequently held the prestigious Lady Wallis Budge Junior Research Fellowship in Egyptology. After two years at Durham University as a Leverhulme Trust Special Research Fellow in the Department of Archaeology\, Toby returned to Cambridge in 1999. He has been a Fellow of Clare College\, Cambridge since 2003. Toby has been hailed by the Daily Telegraph as ‘the foremost Egyptologist of his time’ and is a regular media commentator on Egypt. He has lectured on Ancient Egypt throughout the UK and overseas. Toby was the consultant for the BBC’s ground-breaking documentary on the building of the Great Pyramid\, and has contributed to many other television and radio programmes\, including BBC’s ‘Horizon’ and Channel 4’s ‘Private Lives of the Pharaohs’. Toby is the author of 8 books on Ancient Egypt\, the most recent of which\, The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt\, was named by the Times\, the Sunday Times\, and BBC History Magazine as one of the history books of the year\, and won the Hessell-Tiltman Prize for the best popular history of 2010.

SUMMARY:Claire Ollett, 'Beneficial is Seti-beloved-of Amen in the Domain of Amen' (Manchester)
DESCRIPTION:The Amarna Period had caused political\, religious and social upheaval and the Eighteenth Dynasty was in its death throes because the last king of the royal bloodline\, Tutankhamen\, had no heir. When Seti I ascended the throne after the death of Ramesses I\, he was the first king to inherit the office from his father since Tutankhamen and due to the short reign of his father it essentially fell to him to establish his own legitimacy and that of the dynasty. This paper will look at the monumental landscape of Seti I at Thebes to see what it can tell us about Seti’s agenda and how he went about establishing that legitimacy. I have a first class degree in Egyptology and a distinction in an MA Egyptology from the University of Liverpool where I am currently the Duncan Norman Research Scholar studying for a PhD examining the monumental landscape of Hatshepsut at Thebes. I worked on the Renaissance North-West funded Garstang Project and was a co-designer of the exhibition From Egypt’s Sands to Northern Hills: John Garstang’s Excavations in Egypt. I am also a co-founder and chairperson of TheBES (The Blackburn Egyptology Society) as well as a member of MAES.

SUMMARY:Dr Claire Malleson, 'A page from the Book of Genesis: changing visions of the Fayum Landscape' (Manchester)
DESCRIPTION:To the traveller in Egypt and the Egyptolgist alike the Fayum region can represent different things. It is viewed to be the land of the Labyrinth and the Lake\, and a rich fertile oasis\, the home of some of the most important Middle Kingdom remains\, and a focus of interest regarding the changing environment in Egypt. This lecture will present some of the many very different perceptions of the Fayum\, from Ancient Egypt\, classical Greece and Rome\, Medieval Islamic scholars and early European travellers. It will examine who influenced who\, and how literary trends and story-telling played a critical role in shaping our ideas as well as tracking some of the percpetions of the region which have remained the same throughout history. Claire studied Egyptology in London at Birkbeck College and Bloomsbury Summer Schools from 1998 whilst working with touring dance companies. She left London for Liverpool to start her MA (part-time) in 2002. In 2004 she graduated\, the topic of her thesis being Investigating Ancient Egyptian Towns: a Case Study of Itj-tawy. Claire began her PhD (part-time) at Liverpool in 2005; she started working on sites in Egypt\, training as an archaeobotanist with Dr Murry at Giza (Mark Lehner’s site) and went on to work as a botanist at other sites in Egypt. She completed her PhD in 2012\, her thesis being Imagined and Experienced: Changing Perceptions of the Fayum Landscape. As well as Giza\, she has worked at the archaeological sites of Tell el-Retaba\, Medinet Gurob\, Sais\, Tell Mutubis\, Tell el-Borg\, Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham and\, in the UK\, Sedgeford in Norfolk and Chester Roman Amphitheatre.

SUMMARY:Dr Robert Morkot, 'Abu Simbel: exploring and understanding the temples' (Manchester)
DESCRIPTION:The temples of Abu Simbel are amongst the most famous and recognisable of Egyptian monuments. This is largely due to their relocation during the UNESCO campaign of the 1960s. However\, they have been icons of ancient Egypt since the first European encounters with them in the early 19th century. Nevertheless\, overawed by the architecture and engineering\, the actual purpose and meaning of the temples are rarely considered. In this talk we look at the early travellers and their ‘discovery’ of the temples\, and then explore the location and purpose of these spectacular creations. Robert Morkot is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Exeter. He studied Ancient History and Egyptology at University College London (1977-1980)\, followed by postgraduate studies at London including a year at the Humboldt-University\, Berlin. He was G.A. Wainwright Fellow in Near Eastern Archaeology in the Oriental Institute\, University of Oxford (1988-1992). He has been a member of the Committees\, and a Trustee\, of the Egypt Exploration Society (1991-94\, 2000-2010)\, and is currently Chair of the Society of Libyan Studies. He was a member of the Committee (2004-2009) and Chair (2009-2011) of ASTENE (Association for the Study of Travel in Egypt and the Near East). He currently holds an AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) Fellowship for a project on the ‘Intellectual Development of Egyptology 1780-1880’. He is a leading authority on the relationship between Pharaonic Egypt and Nubia (Kush)\, and on the 25th Dynasty. His other main areas of interest are Egypt and Libya\, the historiography of Egypt and the reception of antiquity in western Europe.

SUMMARY:An Evening in Secret Egypt (Carlisle)
DESCRIPTION:Wander around Secret Egypt after dark – and be prepared to hear travellers’ tales from the intrepid Miss Pauling\, a Victorian explorer whose adventures will inform and entertain you! Let our treasures inspire your creativity; local artist Pui Lee will guide you to produce your own version of Egyptian artwork. Make your own Shabti figurine and Egyptian prints on cotton. Make your own Egyptian inspired prints on cotton - which could form a tea towel or just a decorative wall hanging. Relief printmaking was first used by the Egyptians to print on fabric. In this hands-on workshop\, you will explore Egyptian patterns and colour symbology to create your own Egyptian inspired print on a piece of cotton. The colours used in ancient Egyptian art were symbolic and all had different meanings: White - represented purity\, power and greatness; it was considered a sacred colour Black - represented the passage of death and the night Red - represented life and victory. It was also used to convey intensity Yellow - was often used to represent gold and therefore signified that the subject was imperishable and indestructible. The eternal colour used to depict the sun god. Blue - represented water\, the sky\, life\, fertility and re-birth Green - was the colour of vegetation and represented new life Make Your Own Shabti Figurine It is likely that shabti figures evolved from the servant figures common in tombs of the Middle Kingdom. They were shown as being mummified like the deceased\, with their own coffins\, and were inscribed with a spell to provide food for their master or mistress in the afterlife. From the New Kingdom (about 1550-1070 BC) onwards\, the deceased was expected to take part in the maintenance of the 'Field of Reeds'\, where he or she lived for eternity. This meant undertaking agricultural labour\, such as ploughing\, sowing and reaping the crops. The shabti figure became regarded as a servant figure that would carry out heavy work on behalf of the deceased; the figures were still in the shape of mummies\, but now held agricultural implements\, such as hoes. They were also inscribed with a spell which made them answer when the deceased was called to work. The name 'shabti' means 'answerer'. In this hands-on workshop\, you will make your own unique Shabti figurine from clay to contribute towards a collaborative installation\, "The Field of Dreams"\, where instead of carrying out heavy duty labour; these servant figures can act your hopes and dreams even in the afterlife! Perhaps you have always fancied being a rockstar on stage playing to thousands of people or maybe you just want a servant figure to do the hoovering for you! After the event\, you can take your Shabti home with you to remind you of what you want to achieve in this life! www.puilee.co.uk Please call the Box Office for bookings 01228 618700.

SUMMARY:EES Edinburgh Study Day, 'Temples, Tombs and Fascinating Mummies: Deir el-Bahri and those who left their mark there'
DESCRIPTION:The Society will be hosting this study day in collaboration with National Museums Scotland. National Museums Scotland will be hosting the Fascinating Mummies exhibition of treasures from the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden\, from 11 February to 27 May 2012. This study day\, organised by the EES and NMS with the support of Egyptology Scotland\, takes as its starting point\, the mummy of Ankh-hor\, an early 26th Dyn Priest of Montju at Karnak\, which is the exhibition's star attraction. Ankh-hor was buried in the Late Period cemetery within the temple of Hatshepsut at Deir El-Bahri\, a monument with which the Society has a very close association. The lectures will explore the site\, Hatshepsut\, the female pharaoh with whom it is most often associated\, and its long history before and after her reign. The programme for the day will be as follows: 10.00 Registration\, coffee/tea and biscuits 10.30 Opening remarks 10.45 Dr Aidan Dodson\, Deir el-Bahri before the Late Period: Montuhotep\, Hatshepsut\, the Royal Mummies and More 11.30 Chris Naunton\, Still thriving: Deir el-Bahri and el-Asasif in the Late Period 12.15 Questions 12.30 Lunch (please make your own arrangements) and opportunity to view Fascinating Mummies 14.00 Chris Naunton\, The EES at Deir el-Bahri: Edouard Naville\, Howard Carter and the revealing of temples 14.45 Questions 15.30 Coffee/tea and biscuits 16.00 Dr Aidan Dodson\, West Theban Pioneers: Belzoni\, Rhind\, Wilkinson and their contemporaries 16.45 Discussion and closing remarks 17.00 Close Dr Aidan Dodson is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Archaeology & Anthropology at the University of Bristol. Deir el-Bahari before the Late Period: Montuhotep\, Hatshepsut\, the Royal Mummies and More. The great bay in the West Theban cliffs now known as Deir el-Bahri first became a burial-place following the reunification of Egypt by Montuhotep II\, who turned it into a necropolis for himself\, his family and court. Half a millennium later\, Hatshepsut and Thutmose III built their temples there\, and during the Third Intermediate Period the area became a magnet for high status burials - including that of the high priest of Amun\, Panedjem II\, whose sepulchre was to become the royal cache\, the last ancient resting place of some of the greatest kings of the New Kingdom. West Theban Pioneers: Belzoni\, Rhind\, Wilkinson and their contemporaries. The first decades of the nineteenth century have often been called the 'heroic' era of Egyptology. Here we look at the careers of Belzoni and some of those who followed him in investigating Western Thebes\, including Alexander Henry Rhind - often regarded as the first 'scientific' excavator in Egypt. Chris Naunton is Deputy Director of the EES. Deir el-Bahri is among the most spectacular sites (and sights) in Egypt. Gazing at the harmonious marriage of the 18th Dynasty temple to the natural landscape one imagines Hatshepsut would be pleased that her monument dominates the landscape in the twenty-first century. But was it always like that? In the centuries following the end of the New Kingdom the temple remained an important stop on the 'Beautiful Festival of the Valley' procession but was also re-used as a cemetery. When the EES came to work at the site in 1883 a mudbrick tower which formed part of the later monastery - the 'Deir' which gives its name to the site - was the most striking building in evidence. Over the course of two talks Chris will explain what came after Hatshepsut\, what the EES found when it began working at the site\, and how Hatshepsut came to dominante the area again during the twentieth century. TO BOOK: Please contact the National Museum of Scotland Telephone and online bookings open on 14 November 2011. The EES will NOT be handling bookings for this event.

SUMMARY:'Fascinating Mummies' exhibition opens at the National Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh)
DESCRIPTION:Ends 27th May 2012 Fascinating Mummies is an unmissable exhibition of significant treasures from the world famous Egyptology collections of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. They are displayed alongside objects from our own important collections which have contributed to the understanding of life\, death and the afterlife in Ancient Egypt. This will be the only opportunity to see this intriguing exhibition in the UK. Archaeology meets science: The Ancient Egyptian belief in the afterlife and their desire to preserve the body after death has left a rich legacy for archaeologists and scientists to study. Fascinating Mummies reveals people from the past who lived\, worked and died over 2\,000 years ago. That mummies should have survived throughso many centuries is almost miraculous. Once pillaged or displayed as curios\, mummies later became objects of discovery and scientific examination. Technology bringing the past to life: Modern technologies\, often developed for the medical field\, have enabledscientists and archaeologists to develop their knowledge of Egyptian illnesses\, eating habits and livingconditions. The exhibition includes a very recent CT scan of a mummy from the National Museums Scotland’s collection. The scan provided new information\, which cannot otherwise be seen\, about the mummification of thebody and its condition\, and reveals the scarabs which were enclosed in the wrapping. Ankhor\, high priest of Thebes: One of the exhibition’s central stories is that of Ankhhor\, a high priest of Thebeswho lived 650 years before Christ. The Ankhhor mummy and its three coffins became part of the Rijksmuseumvan Oudheden collection in 1828. Unusually for that time\, the museum experts did not unwrap the mummy. Although much had been learned from hieroglyphics and symbols on his three sarcophagi\, it is only recently that we have come to learn about Ankhhor and his secrets. A CT scan gave an insight into his anatomy\, age and general health and showed how Ankhhor was mummified. A fascinating glimpse into history: Ancient Egyptians believed that they died only to be born again. Carefully preserved by the embalmer’s art for this new life\, mummies have become important witnesses to the past. The work of archaeologists and scientists has helped reveal many new insights into this fascinating civilisation.

SUMMARY:Ancient Market Day (Liverpool)
DESCRIPTION:Come and spend an afternoon at the School of Archaeology\, Classics and Egyptology’s Ancient Market Day\, a ‘fete-style’ interactive day for exploring aspects of the ancient world (a guide to the market and question sheet will be given to students when they arrive). Experts from the School will be on hand manning the various ‘stalls’ to talk about their areas of expertise and answer questions. Find out what food\, drink and necessities of life Greek\, Romans and Egyptians could buy\, as well as what luxuries were available. Explore where these commodities came from and how they found their way to the ancient market place in a world without trains\, cars or planes\, and try your hand at buying in the Egyptian market without money. Meet some Greek & Roman soldiers\, and experience what religion meant to the Greeks and Romans\, and what they did for fun. Hear ancient languages spoken by eavesdropping on some bartering\, and read and write on our ancient graffiti wall. The Garstang Museum will also be open throughout the afternoon for you to see some real ancient artefacts\, and the day will finish with the firing of a replica catapult and a display of tactics from the re-enactors. More details will be published on the Liverpool Ancient Worlds site as we approach the event\, so keep checking back. Alternatively\, feel free to contact Dr Amy Coker (amycoker@liverpool.ac.uk\, 0151 794 3061) if you would like to register your interest in this event.

SUMMARY:Dr Glenn Godenho/Dr Amy Coker, 'The Languages of the Rosetta Stone' (Liverpool)
DESCRIPTION:The key to the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs was the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. The Stone was discovered on 25th July 1799 during defensive works at Fort St. Julian at el-Rashid (ancient Rosetta)\, by an engineer named Pierre François Xavier Bouchard (one of Napolean’s team during his Egyptian campaign of 1798-1801). The 112.3 cm tall\, 75.7 cm wide\, and 28.4 cm thick fragment of stone is inscribed in three scripts: fourteen remaining lines of Hieroglyphs\, thirty-two lines of a later stage of the ancient Egyptian language known as Demotic\, and fifty-three lines of Greek. Through a series of lectures this day will introduce the stone\, its history\, its importance and its languages. You will learn about how Greek\, and Ancient Egyptian were used in Egypt\, and learn how to read small portions of them through looking at the text of the stone.

SUMMARY:Dr Campbell Price, 'How Did Ancient Egyptian Statues Work?' (Liverpool)
DESCRIPTION:Statues were central to ancient Egyptian religion\, but how did the Egyptians use and understand them? This day school will examine stylistic developments in sculptures of non-royal people\, deities and kings\, and address the meanings behind them through textual sources. We will also study the existence of portraiture\,the role of sculptors and the rituals designed to bring statues to life. The collections of The Garstang Museum of Archaeology provide a valuable resource for this course. Aims This day school covers the background to different types of ancient Egyptian sculpture\, and aims to develop understanding of the use of statues in their original contexts in temples and tombs. Learning Outcomes Students will be able to recognise different statue types and be able to locate them within the chronological development of Egyptian art. Emphasis will be placed on textual sources as explicit statements of statue functions in temples. *Full schedule and bibliography are available on the Liverpool Ancient Worlds website

SUMMARY:Prof. Geoffrey Martin, 'Re-excavating the Royal Tomb of Horemheb (KV57) in the Valley of the Kings' (Manchester)
DESCRIPTION:The tomb of King Horemheb in the Valley of the Kings was found by the American explorer\, Theodore M. Davis\, a century ago. Subsequently he published a handsome volume on the reliefs\, paintings and objects in the tomb. It was surprising\, therefore to realize that there were still large amounts of debris inside the monument. It seemed worth investigating these\, in case anything had been overlooked by the Davis Expedition. In three short seasons the work was carried out by the Cambridge Expedition to the Valley of the Kings\, with interesting results. The Egyptian authorities also gave permission for the Expedition to examine\, catalogue\, and photograph the objects found by Davis\, hardly any of which had received definitive treatment in Davis' publication. Geoffrey is the Edwards Professor of Egyptology Emeritus\, University College London; Fellow Commoner\, Christ's College\, Cambridge University; Field Director\, Cambridge Expedition to the Valley of the Kings. He is most famous for his discoveries of the tomb of Maya\, Tutankhamun's treasurer and the private tomb of Horemheb but also more generally for his work in the Valley of the Kings and Saqqara. The discoveries in Saqqara include Tia\, Ramesses the Great's sister and other dignitaries. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.45pm start

SUMMARY:Colin Reader 'The Sphinx: Evolution of a Concept' (Manchester)
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 6.30pm for 7.45pm start MAES Mon 12 March: Colin Reader: THE SPHINX: EVOLUTION OF A CONCEPT Colin Reader says "When I started to look at the issues surrounding the age of the Great Sphinx of Giza\, there was another niggling issue - where had the idea of the Sphinx come from? Most books on the Sphinx start at the Fourth Dynasty and even if it did emerge in the Fourth Dynasty\, the concept of the human headed lion most have evolved from other\, older religious ideas. Yet no one seems to have explored this. In this presentation we will examine the archaeology of the Early Dynastic Period to identify the older elements that evolved into the concept of the sphinx and look for evidence for this evolution in the archaeological record. I will also look at the surprising implications of this for the Early Dynastic origins of the Great Sphinx of Giza."
